Spot the difference between two pictures

Add two near-identical pictures — a puzzle page, two frames of a game, or one of the drawn puzzles below. The comparison counts the differences, keeps them hidden, and reveals each one as you find it.

Private · Browser-based · No uploads

Two pictures in, every difference out.

  1. 1. Drop, paste or choose the earlier picture as A.
  2. 2. Add the later one as B — or drop both at once.
  3. 3. The comparison starts by itself; switch views any time.

PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF (first frame), AVIF, BMP and HEIC where this browser can decode it. Different sizes are fine — they are aligned for you.

Both files are read by this page on your device. There is no upload step, because there is no server to upload to.

How the count is made

The two pictures are aligned first, so a scan that sits a few pixels lower than the other does not count as a difference everywhere. Changed pixels are then grouped: pixels close to each other become one difference, and specks smaller than the minimum size are ignored. The header shows how many groups were found before you start.

That number is a measurement, not the puzzle's official answer. A puzzle maker might count a recoloured shirt and a missing button on it as two differences where the comparison sees one, or the comparison might pick up printing noise the puzzle maker never intended. The sensitivity and merge sliders let you bring the count in line with what you see.

Playing it

Click on either picture where you think something differs. A click inside or close to a hidden difference circles it and gives it a number; a click elsewhere shows a brief cross. Hint (or the H key) draws a wide ring around one difference you have not found yet, without pointing at it exactly. Reveal all shows every circle, and Start again hides them for the next player. The timer is off unless you switch it on.

For worksheets and classrooms

The print button produces two A4 pages: the puzzle on the first, the answer key with numbered circles on the second. The puzzle and the answer key are also available as separate PNG files. Everything is drawn in this page from the two pictures you added; there is no puzzle library here, and nothing you add is kept.

Questions people ask

›How many differences are there?

The header shows how many the comparison found at the current sensitivity. A printed puzzle's own answer can differ: change the sensitivity and merge sliders if the count looks too high or too low.

›Can I get a hint?

Yes. Press Hint or the H key and a ring appears around the area of one difference you have not found yet.

›Can I print the puzzle with the answers?

Yes. “Print A4 sheet” prints the puzzle on page 1 and the answer key on page 2; choose “Save as PDF” in the print dialog for a file. Separate PNGs are offered too.
